What makes a good website?

How effective is your website? Does it stand out from your competitors? Do you consider your audience and how they view your website? Like fashion each year websites take on new trends and technology advances… As web designers we are constantly reading and learning in order to keep up with the latest technology and ensure our clients have the best website and stand out from their competitors. Here a few key ingredients which we will help lead to a great website:

1. Strong and Clear Message

Content is key, it needs to be efficient, accessible and searchable. In order to have a successful and engaging website, it should have a simple and clear message that all visitors can understand. The best way to communicate your website’s purpose is through a clear message on your homepage. This will also help search engines categorise your website for appropriate keywords and phrases. Try to include key words which are likely to be used by customers searching for your company or service. Start with your content first before you look to getting your new website designed and its also worth considering working with a copywriter at this stage.

2. Easy Navigation

Your website must be easy to navigate, there are so many websites on the internet which are impossible to navigate around and visitors end up getting lost and confused and eventually just leave the website no wiser than when they entered. Organise the information on your website and structured way. Think of the general path you would like visitors to follow. Consider adding sub-pages to the top navigation to organise your information into specific categories. Ensure your website is easy to read both content wise and visually.

3. Be Responsive

This year has seen the biggest rise in mobile traffic to websites. Rather than have 2 websites built we prefer to construct a single website and make it responsive. This means that we will code your website to adapt to the screen size, and re-flow the relevant content on screen. This cuts down on development time and cost. If you look at our website on a computer or laptop it might look like this:

If you look at it on a tablet it will look like this:

responsive-ipad

And if you look at it on a smartphone it will look like this:

4. Design

Beautiful & contemporary design makes a site memorable. A good website is built around a theme that matches its market and personality as well as appropriately representing your brand. Although on the surface web design looks fairly easy it does require specialised skills and knowledge to create an effective website that actually works for your business.

Serious Web Design involves several major skill sets at one time including, creative visual/graphic design, computer programming, usability skills/knowledge and page layout skills.

More than just visuals. Web Design isn’t just about the ‘visual design’ of the pages (the most often cited criteria of judgement). Whilst a website has to be visually appealing, it also has to comply with more than ‘looking nice’ if it is to serve as a business tool and deliver a return on its investment.

5. Community

Building a community for your website is one of the best investments you can make. Its crucial to establish an online presence. A website is no good if you don’t get any visitors. With social networking its becoming easier than ever to establish a good online presence and drive customers to your website. Networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Pintrest are an excellent place to start, creating a profile and actively posting updates and information and pointing people to your website. In addition to creating social network profiles creating and maintaining a blog is one of the most effective ways to build a good community and keep your content fresh and up to date.
